כָּפַר: God’s atoning grace covers us

kaphar (kaw-far'): To cover, to atone, to make reconciliation, to purge

This week’s Hebrew word is kaphar, the rich word used for “atonement.” It literally means “to cover”—the same word used in Genesis for covering the ark with pitch, and also used for covering sins throughout Leviticus. Right after the fall, God covered Adam and Eve with animal skins—a powerful picture of how He would ultimately “cover” our sin through Christ's work on the cross. But, you'll see, it's not JUST covering something up, as if it didn't happen. The word means to make reconciliation and to purge the brokenness.

Kaphar reminds us that atonement isn’t just about covering up what’s wrong- it’s about God Himself making a way to have a repaired relationship with us. The shame and separation that comes from the fall and sin shows us our need for the ultimate atonement bought for us on the bloody cross. As Christ untied his burial wrappings, He wrapped us in mercy we could never earn.

Where do you need to rest in God’s covering and atoning grace this week?
