ἐπισκιάζω: His Presence HERE
episkiazó: To overshadow, to cast a shadow upon
This week’s Greek word; "episkiazo" is found in Luke 1:35 when the angel tells Mary, “the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” This isn’t just a light covering—it echoes the Old Testament stories where God’s glory cloud filled the tabernacle and temple, signaling His holy, powerful presence among His people. It pops up one more time in Luke's gospel, in Luke 9 at Jesus’ transfiguration, when a cloud envelops Him and the voice of God declares Jesus's divinity and authority.
What really strikes me is how John uses this word to point our eyes not to Mary's (or anyone else's) awesomeness, but to God's presence with man. After all, Isaiah did prophesy that the Messiah would be "Immanuel"(God with us). This word highlights how the Bible as a whole is longing for the closeness to God that was lost at the garden. God meets the divide of sin and shame with Himself- coming humbly as a man. He is present, powerful, and close.
As you go through this week, remember: you are never far from God’s presence. The same God who "overshadowed" Mary and her womb also filled the temple and our hearts. He no longer needs to dwell in a temple made with human hands, but now dwells in our hearts.
