אֶמֶת: God’s Truth We Can Count On
emeth: Truth, faithfulness, reliability, firmness
This week’s Hebrew word, emeth, pops up around 127 times in the Old Testament. While we usually think of “truth” as just the facts, emeth is so much deeper—it’s about reliability, stability, integrity, and faithfulness. This word describes God’s very character, the foundation of His promises, and the standard for how He calls us to live.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, I’m especially thankful for God’s emeth—His unchanging faithfulness and the dependable hope we can always count on. This year, the world has felt so chaotic and so this week I keep thinking about God's emeth. He is firm and reliable even when I can't see the redemption, He's got it planned. He is firm and faithful even when the world around me isn't!
When I hold onto truth, or seek for the truth, I am seeking for the Lord. When I am distraught and tired of a world in turmoil, I am seeking for God's firm reliability. Honestly, emeth reminds me Jesus is everything I'm searching for.
Scriptures where we find "emeth":
Exodus 34:6 — places “truth” at the heart of God’s self-revelation: “The LORD passed in front of Moses and proclaimed, ‘The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and truth.’” Truth is therefore neither abstract principle nor mere moral ideal; it is personal, rooted in God’s being.
Psalm 89:14 — “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
steadfast love and faithfulness (’emeth) go before you."
