שָׂבַר: The Hebrew Word for Hope

Sabar: To hope, to wait, to expect

This week’s Hebrew word, sabar, caught my attention last week while reading Nehemiah because I noticed it was repeated twice in chapter 2 for "inspect". When I dug a little deeper, I learned that it doesn’t just mean to look at something—it’s about looking closely, paying attention, and expecting something good.

Sometimes it’s translated as “inspect” (like in Nehemiah 2 when checking out the walls), but it can also mean waiting with hope, like in Psalm 104:27, where people “wait” for God to provide.

Honestly, this word really resonated with me in my own walk with the Lord. I find myself analyzing life and picking everything apart, which can make me feel like things are never good enough or that I need to work harder. But sabar is different—it’s not just about scrutinizing things; it’s about having hopeful, trusting expectation that God is up to something, even if I can’t see it yet.

So this week, I’m trying to shift from just “looking” at what’s going on in my life, to expecting—trusting that God is really working behind the scenes.

Scriptures where we find "sabar":

Ruth 1:13Naomi asks whether her daughters-in-law will “wait until they were grown,” portraying the futility of pinning one’s future on an uncertain prospect.

Nehemiah 2:13; 2:15 Nehemiah “inspected the walls of Jerusalem” under cover of night. The term emphasizes deliberate investigation before undertaking the rebuilding work.

Esther 9:1 The enemies of the Jews “had hoped to overpower them,” but their anticipation is overturned, displaying the vanity of confidence set against God’s purposes.

Psalm 104:27; 145:15 “All creatures look to You,” and “The eyes of all look to You,” an ecological panorama of the creation’s dependence on the Creator for daily provision.

Psalm 119:166 “I wait for Your salvation, O LORD,” the psalmist coupling expectant hope with obedient living.

Isaiah 38:18 Hezekiah reflects that those in Sheol “cannot hope for Your faithfulness,” underscoring that true expectancy belongs to the living who praise God.
